Description:

The basic idea from the start was to try and do something that is grounded and animalistic (as opposed to something magical or demonic), but which also had a bit of a mythological edge. So I tried sticking to plausible anatomy, and whereas the idea was to make something beastly, it was important to me that it didnt feel like a magical being. I wanted it to be a fleshy, smelly, physical creature.

I wanted to play a little bit with scale, and after having watched a nature documentary about rodents and bats, I thought the shape language would be quite creepy if exaggerated and scaled up. I had this vague image in my head early on of suddenly coming upon this beast when climbing a mountain, perhaps startling it. There was something about those wings silhouetted against the sky, and the exposed rocky outcrop that I thought might make for a good image. In any case, all those thoughts finally came together in a sketch that felt right, so I just kept going with it. 🙂
